Two carpets can look identical in a showroom and age completely differently. The specs on the back of the sample tell you which is which.

Fiber first
Nylon is the resilience champion for stairs, hallways, and family rooms. Solution-dyed polyester and triexta resist stains inherently — color runs through the fiber — and offer excellent value for bedrooms and lower-traffic spaces.
Read density and twist
Bend the sample: if you can easily see the backing, it is low density and will mat. Tighter twist in the yarn tips means the pile holds its shape. These two numbers matter more than the brand name on the label.
Do not cheap out on pad
An 8-pound, 7/16-inch pad is the sweet spot for most residential carpet. Too thick or too soft and the carpet flexes, breaking down the backing early — and voiding some warranties.
