Is porcelain tile better than ceramic for Colorado floors?
Yes for most floor applications. Porcelain is denser, harder, and less porous than ceramic - so it stands up to freeze-thaw on covered patios and heavy traffic in Colorado homes. Schmidt Custom Floors installs rectified porcelain and large-format planks throughout Loveland and Fort Collins.
Why porcelain outperforms every other tile
Porcelain tile is fired at higher temperatures from a denser clay than standard ceramic. The result is a tile that's less than 0.5% porous (effectively waterproof), harder than granite, and rated for commercial-grade traffic. Schmidt Custom Floors installs porcelain tile in homes and businesses across Northern Colorado - and it's the tile we put in our own homes.
Modern porcelain comes in wood-look planks, marble-look slabs, concrete-look squares, and textured outdoor-rated options. You can get the look of any natural material without any of the maintenance.

Where porcelain is the right call
Porcelain is the safest specification for any high-use, wet, or high-value space. It handles freeze-thaw cycles, won't fade in sunlight, and shrugs off everything a family or pet can throw at it.
- Wood-look porcelain planks - all the look of hardwood, none of the water damage risk
- Large-format slabs (24x48, 32x32) - fewer grout lines, modern open feel
- Marble and stone-look porcelain - the look of natural stone without the sealing schedule
- Outdoor patios and pool decks - freeze-thaw rated, slip-resistant finishes available
- Commercial spaces - meets PEI Class 4-5 abrasion ratings for retail and restaurants

Porcelain demands precision. Large-format and plank-shaped tiles are unforgiving of subfloor unevenness - even 1/8" of dip will telegraph through. We laser-level every floor, use leveling clips on every install, and back-butter every plank for 95%+ mortar coverage.
We also use the right cutting tools. Porcelain dulls a standard wet saw blade in minutes - we run rim-segmented diamond blades and an angle grinder with a porcelain-rated wheel for clean cuts at every outlet, vent, and corner.

Porcelain Tile - frequently asked questions
- Yes - porcelain is denser, less porous, and harder. For floors, wet areas, and any high-traffic space, porcelain is worth the small price upgrade over ceramic.
- Modern wood-look porcelain is remarkably realistic - especially in 8"+ plank widths with textured surfaces. Most guests can't tell unless they get on their hands and knees.
- Porcelain itself is extremely hard, but it can crack if the subfloor flexes underneath. That's why we use uncoupling membranes on plywood subfloors and large-format installs.
- It depends on the finish. We recommend matte or textured finishes (DCOF 0.42 or higher) for bathrooms, entries, and outdoor use. Polished porcelain is best for dry rooms only.
