What's the difference between engineered and solid hardwood in Colorado?
Engineered hardwood has a real-wood top layer over a stable plywood core that stays flat when Northern Colorado humidity drops to 15% in winter. It's the right choice over concrete, in basements, and with radiant heat - where solid hardwood can cup or gap. Schmidt Custom Floors installs both throughout Loveland and Fort Collins.
Engineered hardwood done right
Engineered hardwood is real wood on top of a dimensionally stable plywood core. It looks identical to solid hardwood underfoot but won't cup, gap, or buckle when humidity shifts. That makes it the right pick for basements, slab-on-grade homes, kitchens, and rooms with radiant heating.
Schmidt Custom Floors stocks engineered hardwood from Lauzon, Mirage, Mercier, Kahrs, Coswick, Shaw, and Armstrong - the same brands designers specify on luxury builds.

Why homeowners choose engineered
Engineered hardwood gives you most of the benefits of solid wood with none of the climate sensitivity.
- Stable on concrete slabs and over radiant heat
- Available in wider planks (up to 9") that solid wood can't deliver
- Pre-finished from the factory with aluminum-oxide topcoats
- Floating, glue-down, or nail-down installation - whatever your subfloor needs
- Refinishable once or twice depending on wear-layer thickness

Most engineered hardwood is made from European or American oak, but you can also get maple, walnut, hickory, and exotic species. Plank widths run from a classic 3" up to designer 9"-wide boards. Finishes range from clear matte to wire-brushed, hand-scraped, fumed, and reactive-stained European looks.

Professional installation
Our installers assess your subfloor first - moisture testing on concrete, joist inspection on plywood, flatness gauges everywhere. We then recommend floating, glue-down, or nail-down based on what will perform best. Every quote includes baseboard removal/reinstall, transitions to adjacent rooms, and full disposal of your existing floor.

Engineered Hardwood - frequently asked questions
- Northern Colorado swings from 60%+ summer monsoon humidity to sub-20% winter dryness. Solid hardwood expands and contracts through that cycle; engineered hardwood's cross-plied core barely moves. That's why we default to engineered for basements, new builds on slab, and any home with forced-air heat and no whole-home humidifier.
- Yes - if the wear layer is 3mm or thicker, it can be sanded and refinished once or twice. Thinner wear layers (1-2mm) should be screened and recoated rather than fully sanded.
- Water-resistant, not waterproof. It tolerates the occasional spill far better than solid wood, but standing water from a dishwasher leak or burst pipe should still be cleaned up promptly.
- Yes - this is one of engineered hardwood's biggest advantages. We follow manufacturer guidelines on subfloor temperature and acclimation to prevent gapping.
- Floating is faster and easier to repair. Glue-down feels more solid underfoot and is quieter. Over concrete we typically recommend glue-down; over plywood, either works.
- We stock 5", 7", and 9" European white oak in matte, wire-brushed, and reactive-stained finishes - the widths designers spec on today's Harmony, Timnath, and Windsor builds. Custom orders are welcome for chevron, herringbone, and rift-and-quartered runs.
