Who installs hardwood flooring in Loveland and Fort Collins?
Schmidt Custom Floors has installed solid and engineered hardwood across Northern Colorado since 1968. Oak, maple, hickory, and walnut in site-finished and prefinished formats - installed and finished by our in-house crew, never subcontracted.
Northern Colorado's hardwood flooring specialists
Schmidt Custom Floors has installed thousands of hardwood floors across Loveland, Fort Collins, and the greater Front Range. We specialize in solid hardwood, engineered hardwood, and custom parquet from every major manufacturer - Lauzon, Mirage, Mercier, Bruce, Kahrs, Coswick, Shaw, and Armstrong.
Because we buy directly from the mills, you get manufacturer pricing on the same floors the big-box stores sell at retail markup. Our in-house crew - never subs - handles every step: removal, subfloor leveling, installation, staining, and finishing.

Solid vs. engineered - how to choose for Colorado's climate
Both are real wood. Which one you should pick depends on your subfloor and Northern Colorado's famously dry air.
- Solid hardwood - 3/4" plank of 100% wood, nailed down, refinishable 5-7 times over its lifetime. Best on plywood subfloors on main and upper levels in Loveland and Fort Collins.
- Engineered hardwood - real wood top layer on a stable plywood core that stays put when NoCo humidity drops to 15% in January. Best over concrete, below grade, and with radiant heat.
- Wide planks (5"-7") - modern look, work in both solid and engineered constructions.
- Parquet patterns - chevron, herringbone, custom inlays - all available in solid or engineered.

Learn moreWood species and stain colors for Front Range homes
Red and white oak account for about 70% of our installations across Loveland and Fort Collins - they're durable, take stain beautifully, and age gracefully in Colorado's dry climate. Maple offers a cleaner, more uniform grain. Hickory is the hardest domestic wood and great for active households with pets. Walnut and cherry bring richer, darker tones for more formal rooms.
Stain options range from natural blonde and whitewashed to grey, fumed, and dark espresso. We bring sample boards to your home so you can see the actual stain on the actual wood in your actual light - not a print in a catalog.

Professional installation and refinishing
We install nail-down, glue-down, and floating hardwood depending on what your subfloor allows. Every job includes moisture testing, subfloor leveling, baseboard removal and reinstall, and full disposal of old flooring. For existing hardwood that just needs new life, our refinishing crew offers 99% dust-contained sanding, custom staining, and water-based polyurethane finishes that cure in days, not weeks.

Hardwood Flooring - frequently asked questions
- White oak, hickory, and rift-and-quartered red oak are our top picks for Loveland and Fort Collins homes. They move less with humidity swings than plainsawn cuts, and their hardness ratings (Janka 1290-1820) shrug off dog claws and mountain-town foot traffic.
- Engineered, without exception. Basements sit on concrete slabs where moisture can migrate up seasonally. Engineered hardwood's plywood core stays dimensionally stable; solid wood installed on a slab will cup within a year in NoCo.
- Most whole-home installs take 2 to 4 days. Add 3-5 days if we're also refinishing existing hardwood to blend the new work into the old. We can usually start within 2-3 weeks of your estimate.
- Installed pricing typically runs $6-$18 per sq ft depending on species, plank width, and grade. A realistic budget for a 1,500 sq ft main floor of mid-range engineered white oak is $12,000-$16,000 installed, including tear-out and disposal.
- Engineered hardwood works beautifully in kitchens and below-grade basements - the plywood core stays stable when humidity shifts. We don't recommend solid hardwood in either location.
- A quality solid hardwood floor can last 80-100 years and be refinished 5-7 times along the way. Engineered hardwood lasts 30-50 years and can typically be refinished 1-2 times.
- We bring sample boards in your wood species and color so we can match within a shade or two. If you want a perfect blend, we can refinish your existing hardwood at the same time so the whole floor reads as one.
