Choosing Flooring for Colorado's Dry Climate

Flooring that performs beautifully in Ohio can misbehave in Loveland. Our indoor humidity routinely drops into the teens in winter, daytime temperature swings are dramatic, and high-altitude sun is intense. Here is how we help Northern Colorado homeowners pick floors that stay flat, tight, and good-looking for decades.

Key summary

  • Dry winter air shrinks solid wood — expect seasonal gapping unless you control humidity.
  • Engineered hardwood and quality luxury vinyl plank handle our swings with less movement.
  • Keep indoor humidity between roughly 30% and 50% year-round.
  • South- and west-facing rooms need UV-aware finishes and window coverings.

Why humidity matters more here

Wood is hygroscopic: it gives up moisture to dry air and takes it back in humid air. On the Front Range, homes can swing from 40% relative humidity in July to under 15% in January. Solid hardwood responds by shrinking across the width of every board, which shows up as hairline gaps. It is normal and usually seasonal — but the wider the plank and the drier the house, the more visible it becomes.

Materials that shrug off the swings

Engineered hardwood uses a cross-layered core that moves far less than solid wood, which makes it our most-recommended wood product for Colorado homes, especially over concrete or radiant heat. Luxury vinyl plank is dimensionally stable and waterproof, ideal for basements, mudrooms, and rental properties. Porcelain tile does not care about humidity at all and is the right answer for entries and bathrooms that see snowmelt.

What to do in the home itself

A whole-home humidifier tied to your furnace is the single best investment for a wood floor here. Add walk-off mats at every door to catch sand and ice melt, use UV-filtering window film or shades in sun-blasted rooms, and rotate area rugs a couple of times a year so the floor ages evenly.
